Featuring a new 12.1 effective mega pixel full frame CMOS image sensor, the Nikon D3 opens the door to a new era of Nikon DSLR. The Nikon D3 is the first of the cameras that Nikon has termed the FX-format to differentiate its full frame sensor from the DX-format or APS-C sized sensors found in other Nikon DSLRs. The Nikon D3 offers an extremely broad light sensitivity range. With its normal range from ISO 200 to ISO 3200, sensitivity can be increased to HI 0.3, HI 0.5, HI 0.7, HI 1 (ISO 12,800 equivalent), HI 2 (ISO 25,600 equivalent), and decreased to Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent), Lo 0.7, Lo 0.5 and Lo 0.3.
With a near-instant power-up within 0.12 seconds and a shutter release time lag of a mere 41ms based on the new CIPA guideline, the Nikon D3 offers speeds that belies its large full frame stature. Capable of continuous shooting at 9fps and the ability of up to 100 shots in FX-format or 5:4-format, you can raise the speed to 11fps when shooting at DX-format, though at a reduced resolution of 5.1 mega pixels.
The Nikon D3 not only offers the unprecedented focusing speed and precision of a new 51-point AF system but also many new features for Nikon that includes support for next-generation high-speed card UDMA. A new eye-level pentaprism viewfinder and Liveview function ensures that you can best equipped when composing your shots. Another useful feature is the double CF card slots which consecutive recording, simultaneous recording, RAW + JPEG separate recording, and copying of data between two cards.
