Makeup Brush Buying Guide From LightInTheBox.com

Brush Hair Material

Brush hair material includes natural bristles from mink, squirrel, horse hair, wool and high-quality synthetic fibers.

Natural bristles

Natural bristles are very soft and can be used to create a natural look. This type of brush will hold your paint for long amounts of time and will create a paint job that is very concise and smooth looking.

Synthetic fibers

Synthetic fibers (generally made from nylon) mean easy maintenance, but the brush hairs are not as soft or flexible. These brushes will do the job but lack the refined touch of natural hair. The advantage is the price; with synthetic brushes generally costing a lot less. These brushes are also more durable, as synthetic hair brushes are easier to wash and have a longer life-span.

Mixed hair

Mixed hair style brushes are a combination of natural and synthetic brush hairs. By combining the fibers you’re able to create a brush softer and more pliable than a purely synthetic brush, but for a lower price than a purely natural one.

Specific Brushes

Each kind of brush has different advantages and disadvantages depending on your intended use. It’s a good idea to include various types of brushes in your makeup kit, giving you a variety of tools at your disposal. Let’s have a look at what these different brushes are made of.

- Foundation brushes are usually made of a high quality synthetic fiber. A top grade set would use natural bristles.

- Powder brushes are made from natural squirrel and pony hair.

- Brow brushes and eye shadow brushes are generally made of wool or horse hair. High-quality synthetic fibers, or a combination of mixed synthetic and natural hair are also used.

The quality of the brushes will have quite an impact on the ease and effect of application, so be sure to choose the right ones! Shop now>>

Makeup Brush Guide

The right brush set can not only save time in creating the right look, but expand the range of looks at your disposal. The key to makeup is blending, for which you need a decent makeup brush set. Below is our list of brushes essential to any makeup kit.

Makeup Brushes for Base

Foundation Brush

Larger brushes are the best way to apply foundation. If you want to achieve a light coat, in order to avoid the “heavy mask” look, pick your tool well – use a brush if you think you will need to touch up on the foundation throughout the day. The foundation brush works perfectly with the contours of the face and jaw line, the tapered edge blends foundation smoothly and flawlessly.

Powder Brush

Brushes are recommended for powdering – a big, fluffy one works best, regardless of whether your powder is pressed or loose. It should spread the product evenly over your face, and the coat can be as light or heavy as you require.

Fan Brush

This brush perfects your powder application by gently wiping, dusting and redistributing the powder along the contours of your face. It will fan away any excess powder of particles, fine tune the powder for a more natural looking finish.

Concealer Brush

These brushes help apply the concealer more evenly over your skin, for a better end result. Simply use the brush to apply concealer over the exact area that requires attention.

Makeup Brushes for Cheeks

Blush Brush

The bristles are arranged in a dome shape and tapered. Dome shaped brushes are best for applying blush, as the color will end up stronger in the center, and blended into the skin as it spreads outwards.

Contour Brush

For expert application of cheek contour. The fibers form a buffed edge and are soft and firmly bundled.

Eye Shadow Brush

For shading and blending eye shadow, suitable for powder eye shadows. A good eye shadow brush should be flat and large enough to apply shadow on the eyelid and the edge of the tip can be used to apply shadow in the crease of the eye. We recommend that you use separate brushes for eye makeup.

Highlight Brush

Use this brush to apply eye shadow across the eyelid and over the brow bone.

Mid-tone Brush

This tapered brush will apply mid-tone shadow perfectly along the crease.

Eye Smudge Brush

A soft-tipped foam applicator for applying powder, liquid or cream products. Tear-shaped tips allows soft delivery and blending of product, particularly around eye area.

Eyeliner Brush

If you use powder or cream eyeliner, you will find an eyeliner brush very useful. The tip presses firmly but softly on the lidstrich to allow concise application. If not, this brush can be passed up for others.

Lash Comb

A lash comb is designed to help separate your lashes despite clumpy mascara. Pick a metal one, as plastic versions are not as effective.

Eyebrow Brush

Use this to shape and groom your brows. Use to define or add "fill". Its precise angled tip provides pro-style application. It is also helpful for blending eye brow pencil, for a smoother, natural look.

Makeup Brushes for Lips

Lip Brush

For applying lipstick or lip gloss, and blending it with your lip liner. A good brush will achieve a far better effect than simply applying lipstick from a tube. Flat with square tip: loads the lips with color and distributes color evenly.

Other Makeup Brushes

Sponge Tip Applicator

A soft-tipped foam applicator for applying powder, liquid or cream products. Tear-shaped tips allows soft delivery and blending of product, particularly around the eye area.

Brush Care

Washing your makeup brushes frequently can help keep your face and skin clean and healthy. Makeup brushes can often harbor lots of dirt and bacteria, which can be easily removed by following the steps listed below.

Step 1

You can use store brought brush cleaner, normal shampoo, vinegar, make-up removers or antibacterial hand soap to clean the bristles of your brushes.

Step 2

To start, run the brush under hot water to rinse off any caked on make-up. Do this for a minute, holding the brush at a downward angle, so that the water runs down the bristles rather than back along the handle.

Step 3

If using store brought brush cleaner, spray the liquid onto the brush, and follow any directions on the bottle.
If using vinegar, make a mixture of 2 parts vinegar, 1 part water, and soak the bristles for 2-3 minutes.
If using make-up remover or hand soap, please use one that is of a gel or cream consistency. Squirt a small amount onto the bristles and lightly massage it in, being careful not to scrub. Let the remover sit for 2-3 minutes.

Step 4

When time is up, run the brush under hot water once again to rinse. Pull the brush out of the water, and squeeze the bristles lightly between thumb and forefinger from the base to the tip to remove any excess water. Repeat the process if you are unsure if all the soap or cleaner has been removed.

Step 5

Lightly squeeze the brush with a washcloth to remove as much water as possible, then leave the brush flat on its side, or stand it up in a brush holder to dry.

Note:

When cleaning your brushes, never push the bristles against the bottom of the container. Set the brushes in the container with the bristles up to maintain shape and quality.

FAQ

Which brushes come in sets?

If you just need the basics, our 5 to 7-piece brush sets usually include a combination of foundation, blush, eye shadow, lip, shader, eyebrow, eye liner and eye smudge brushes.

For a more professional application, some of our sets come with as many as 40 brushes! These include all the basics mentioned above, plus specialized tools for lining, blending, contouring and more.

What are the brushes made of?

Most of the brushes we sell are made of plastic handles and a blend of high-quality synthetic and natural bristles (usually wool or horse hair).

Why are my brushes shedding?

It’s normal for the brushes to shed some hairs in the first few uses. When you receive your set, we recommend carefully washing with shampoo and drying the brushes. After a washing and a few uses, they will stop shedding hairs and be perfect for precise makeup application.

Can I storage brushes?

Never store brushes so that bristles are bent backward or out of shape.

How to keep the shape?

If you know that you are not going to be using a particular brush for a long period of time, it is best to dampen it in glycerine or soap, form a point or flat edge, and let it dry. This will act as sizing and insure that your bristles will be the right shape when you are ready to use them. Simply wash them out before using.
