Why was I asked for a "CPF" number? (Brazilian customers)

The CPF number (Cadastro de Pessoas Físicas, Portuguese for "Natural Persons Register") is the Brazilian individual taxpayer registry identification. This number is attributed by the Brazilian Federal Revenue to Brazilians and resident aliens who, directly or indirectly, pay taxes in Brazil.

It is an 11-digit number in the format 000.000.000/00.

The CNPJ number is the Brazilian company taxpayer registry identification. This number is attributed by the Brazilian Federal Revenue to Brazilians and resident aliens who, directly or indirectly, pay taxes in Brazil.

It is an 13-digit number in the format 00.000.000/0000-00.

The Regulations of Brazilian customs

1. Starting from 1 June 2005, for all parcels sent to Brazil by express Delivery, the local VAT number of the recipient in Brazil must be filled in the waybill (Box 9, Special Delivery Instructions) and commercial invoice imported into the local area must provide detailed consignee's name, address and declared value in US dollars, otherwise they will be automatically returned to the place of dispatch and the return fee will be charged directly to the sender.

2. Brazilian customs conducts 100% inspection on imported parcels.

Hint: the local customs will levy duties on packages sent to Brazil regardless of their value and weight.
